Joseph A. Rupert Family and House, c. 1910

This photo is of Joseph A. Rupert and his family sitting on the front steps of their home, at 2323 S.E. Creighton Ave. According to fellow History Detective Mike Schmeer:

This Rupert family photo shows three males and two females. Though I cannot yet prove it I suspect that we're seeing Joseph A. Rupert and Sarah M. Rupert, daughter Ethel, son Frank, and Ethel's husband Joe Bullivant, Jr. Maggie may have been the photographer. Of course I could have Ethel and Maggie switched.

Both Joseph and Sarah Rupert were born in Canada, but Joseph was living in Silver City, Idaho Territory by 1870. He lived there at least through 1880. Joseph was a druggist, and single in 1870. But he must have married Sarah there, as they had children Margaret (Maggie), Ethel C., and Francis H. (Frank) there in 1872, 1876, and 1877 respectively. By the 1900 census I found them in Bandon, Coos Co., OR - - minus Joseph. I couldn't find Joseph, but that's probably just an enumerator spelling error. In 1910 the family is in Oak Grove - exactly where one would expect them to be, as the house in the photo was built circa 1904. Joseph's occupation in 1910 was as a "Fruit Farmer". Ethel married in 1903 and moved into Portland with her husband. Frank married in 1908 and also moved to Portland. Maggie, however, never married, and lived out her life as a single woman, and probably in the pictured house. Her father, Joseph, had died in 1922, and Sarah lived to be 93, passing in 1938. Margaret lived until 1967, dying in Clackamas County at the age of 95.
